TMLOA Donates Officiating Proceeds to Area Scholarship Fund
On a brisk sunny day in early December, Members of the Triangle Men’s Lacrosse Officials Association (TMLOA) participated in a boy’s lacrosse event held at the UNC Finley fields. Teams from throughout the southeast and mid-Atlantic participated in this winter play day.
Dozens of TMLOA members officiating the day’s contests donated all proceeds to the Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship fund. TMLOA is proud to provide $1,800 for this local NC scholarship, named in honor of the late Tony Cullen.
Tony is a former player at Ithaca, NY high school and Hobart College lacrosse as a freshman, transferring to Duke in his sophomore year. Tony’s lacrosse achievements as a player at Duke included leading the ACC in scoring in 1978 and the nation in scoring in 1979. Tony became the youngest Division I head coach when he returned to Duke in 1982, at age 24. Tony concluded his lacrosse legacy as one of the most widely respected officials in the United States. In 12 years, he served as the head referee in 10 ACC Tournaments and head referee for five NCAA Division I title games. He served on the NCAA Rules Committee, and mentored dozens of referees who often cite his mechanics and philosophy. Tony passed away in 2002, after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.
The TMLOA is proud to honor Tony’s achievements and lasting impact on North Carolina lacrosse by donating officiating earnings to this scholarship named in his memory. Click here to learn more about Tony Cullen.
